Mumbai, April 21: Air India has signed a 10-year agreement with Thales to provide comprehensive maintenance services for inflight entertainment (IFE) systems across 57 Airbus and Boeing aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s technology and passenger experience upgrade strategy.
The agreement, signed under Thales’ FlytCARE programme, will deliver end-to-end support including line maintenance, spare parts provisioning, repairs, and logistics management for the airline’s advanced AVANT Up IFE systems.
Advanced IFE Systems Across Widebody Fleet
The AVANT Up inflight entertainment systems will be deployed across Air India’s widebody fleet as part of its ongoing fleet modernisation programme. The rollout includes:
- Retrofit installations on existing Boeing 777 and Boeing 787-8 aircraft
- Linefit installations on new Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A350 aircraft
The installation programme is expected to be completed over the next two years, aligning with Air India’s broader transformation strategy to enhance onboard experience and operational efficiency.
What the FlytCARE Programme Delivers
Under the FlytCARE agreement, Thales will provide a fully integrated maintenance solution covering:
- Line maintenance and technical support
- Spare parts availability and logistics
- Repair and overhaul services
- System performance optimisation
Maintenance operations will be carried out from Thales facilities located at Delhi and Mumbai airports, ensuring faster turnaround times and improved service reliability.
Next-Generation Passenger Experience
The AVANT Up system represents the latest generation of inflight entertainment technology, designed to significantly enhance passenger comfort and engagement on long-haul flights.
Key features include:
- 4K HDR touchscreens for ultra-high-definition viewing
- USB-C and USB-A charging ports for device connectivity
- Dual Bluetooth connectivity for wireless audio pairing
The agreement also includes support for 12 new widebody aircraft equipped with the AVANT Up system, making Air India the first airline in the Asia-Pacific region to operate this advanced IFE solution.
Strengthening Engineering and Operations
Jeremy Yew highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership:
“Our partnership with Thales under the FlytCARE programme strengthens Air India’s engineering ecosystem with faster turnaround, deeper technical support, and enhanced component availability.”
The collaboration is expected to improve operational efficiency, reduce system downtime, and enhance overall reliability across the airline’s long-haul fleet.
Driving Digital Transformation in Aviation
The agreement reflects Air India’s ongoing efforts to modernise its fleet and elevate passenger experience as part of its multi-billion-dollar transformation plan under the Tata Group.
As competition intensifies in the global aviation market, airlines are increasingly investing in advanced onboard technologies, including high-definition inflight entertainment and seamless connectivity solutions.
For passengers, enhanced IFE systems play a crucial role in long-haul travel, offering entertainment, connectivity, and comfort throughout the journey.
TTN Take
The Air India Thales partnership marks a major step in integrating next-generation inflight entertainment technology across the airline’s fleet. For the travel trade, this signals a strong focus on premium passenger experience and digital innovation, reinforcing Air India’s position in the competitive long-haul aviation segment.
Rising Importance of Inflight Entertainment Systems
Inflight entertainment (IFE) has become a critical differentiator for airlines, particularly on long-haul routes where passenger expectations for comfort and digital engagement are significantly higher. Modern travellers increasingly expect seamless access to high-quality content, device connectivity, and personalised onboard experiences.
Airlines investing in next-generation IFE systems are seeing improvements in customer satisfaction, brand perception, and repeat travel demand. Enhanced entertainment platforms also support ancillary revenue opportunities through onboard shopping, advertising, and premium content offerings.
Global Trend Toward Connected Cabins
The aviation industry is witnessing a broader shift toward connected cabin ecosystems, where inflight entertainment, connectivity, and passenger services are integrated into a unified digital platform. Solutions like Thales’ AVANT Up are designed to support this evolution by enabling faster updates, scalable content delivery, and compatibility with onboard WiFi systems.
For Air India, this investment aligns with global airline trends focused on digital transformation and enhanced passenger experience, positioning the carrier competitively in the international aviation market.
