Doha: Qatar Airways has temporarily grounded its entire fleet of Airbus A380 superjumbos, withdrawing all eight operational aircraft from service during April and May 2026 in response to ongoing regional disruptions.
All A380 aircraft are currently parked at Hamad International Airport, marking one of the largest capacity reductions in the airline’s history.
Massive Network & Capacity Cuts
Alongside the A380 grounding, the airline has:
- Cut over 12,000 flights
- Suspended services to more than 60 destinations
The decision reflects the growing impact of Middle East regional tensions, which have forced airlines to frequently adjust routes, suspend operations, and manage airspace restrictions.
Operational Disruptions Continue
According to industry reports, Qatar Airways was still operating A380 services until late March before gradually withdrawing the aircraft back to Doha.
The airline’s move underscores the broader challenges faced by Gulf carriers amid ongoing geopolitical uncertainty, affecting both long-haul and regional connectivity.
Planned Return in June
Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium indicates that Qatar Airways is tentatively planning to resume A380 operations from June 1, 2026, with scheduled services from Doha to major global destinations including:
- London Heathrow
- Bangkok
- Singapore
- Paris Charles de Gaulle
- Sydney
However, the airline is reportedly offering refund flexibility through July, signalling the possibility of extended disruptions depending on how the regional situation evolves.
Industry Impact
The temporary withdrawal of the A380 fleet significantly reduces capacity on high-demand long-haul routes, potentially impacting:
- Premium travel availability
- Cargo capacity
- Global airline scheduling
This development highlights the fragility of international aviation networks during periods of geopolitical instability.
