The railway double line project between Baiyappanahalli and Hosur has reached 86 percent completion, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve rail connectivity and reduce congestion across the Bengaluru suburban rail network. According to officials from the South Western Railway Bengaluru Division, the 48 route-kilometre (RKM) project is progressing rapidly, while the Yeshwantpur–Channasandra parallel corridor has achieved about 55 percent progress and is expected to be completed by 2027. The rail doubling initiative is designed to reduce delays caused by single-line crossings, improve travel time for daily commuters, and support economic activity across the Bengaluru metropolitan region. The execution of the project was assigned to Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Company in 2020. So far, 14 RKM of double line has already been commissioned, allowing train operations on the newly developed track sections. Authorities aim to complete the remaining works on the Baiyappanahalli–Hosur stretch by February 2027. As part of the project, the 3.522-RKM Bellandur Road–Carmelaram block section along with the Huskur station yard was commissioned in November. A new double track has been laid between Bellandur Road and Carmelaram, enabling double-line operations on the 14-RKM stretch from Heelalige to Bellandur Road. Infrastructure upgrades have also transformed Bellandur Road Railway Station, which now features five railway lines and two 600-metre high-level platforms. Passenger amenities include a concrete approach road from Varthur Road, seating benches, drinking water facilities, and a subway connecting platforms. Additional developments include six platform shelters measuring 48m x 8m, a new G+1 station building covering 672 square metres, and lift facilities for passenger convenience. A road underbridge has also been constructed to improve connectivity towards Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal. Meanwhile, the 21.7-RKM Yeshwantpur–Channasandra double line corridor remains under construction, with about 55 percent of the work completed so far. The project received administrative approval in 2018 and was later transferred to K-RIDE in June 2020. The project’s sanctioned cost of ₹498.73 crore has increased to ₹656.63 crore as of the 2025–26 financial year due to expanded infrastructure work and project execution requirements. Major engineering works under the broader initiative are nearing completion. Construction of major bridges has reached 96 percent, large bridges 80 percent, and 101 minor bridges are nearly completed with 98 percent progress. Track formation works are largely finished, while station works at four locations have also achieved 98 percent completion. Once completed, the Baiyappanahalli–Hosur and Yeshwantpur–Channasandra double line corridors are expected to significantly ease rail congestion and strengthen connectivity between Bengaluru City, Krishnarajapuram, and Banaswadi, benefiting both commuter and freight movement across the region.
