France pushes greener skies with SAF mandate

France Mandates Increased SAF Usage at Major Airports from 2027

Bengaluru, 13 April: France is taking a significant step toward decarbonising aviation by mandating increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) at major airports starting in 2027. The move is part of the country’s broader climate agenda aligned with European Union sustainability targets.

Under the proposed framework, airlines operating from major French hubs—including Paris—will be required to use a higher percentage blend of SAF in their fuel mix. SAF, produced from renewable resources such as waste oils and biomass, can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to traditional jet fuel.

The policy reflects growing pressure on the aviation sector to address its environmental footprint, particularly as global air travel rebounds. France has been among the leading countries advocating for stricter environmental standards in aviation, and this mandate is expected to accelerate SAF adoption across Europe.

However, industry stakeholders have raised concerns about supply constraints and cost implications. SAF remains significantly more expensive than conventional jet fuel, and scaling production to meet demand remains a challenge. Airlines have called for government incentives and subsidies to ensure a smoother transition.

Despite these challenges, experts believe the move will drive innovation and investment in green aviation technologies. France’s decision is likely to influence other European nations, potentially creating a unified regional push toward sustainable aviation.
