Visakhapatnam, 15 April: The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department is taking a major step toward enhancing coastal tourism by proposing mini cruise services from Visakhapatnam, aimed at boosting sea-based leisure experiences in the region.
As part of the initiative, Tourism Secretary Ajay Jain has written to the Visakhapatnam Port Authority seeking technical feasibility and necessary approvals to launch mini cruise operations with a capacity of around 80 passengers.
Reviving Cruise Tourism Potential
Despite the presence of a modern cruise terminal built at a cost of ₹100 crore within the port premises, cruise tourism in Visakhapatnam has remained largely underutilised. Currently, operations are limited to occasional visits by cruise liners operating routes such as Chennai–Visakhapatnam–Puducherry–Chennai.
The latest proposal aims to unlock this untapped potential by introducing short-distance coastal cruises, making sea tourism more accessible to domestic travellers.
Proposed Cruise Routes
The tourism department has outlined several scenic coastal routes designed to attract both leisure and experiential travellers:
- Visakhapatnam – Bheemili – Visakhapatnam
- Visakhapatnam – Srikakulam
- Visakhapatnam – Vizianagaram
These routes are expected to showcase the natural beauty of Andhra Pradesh’s coastline while creating new tourism circuits.
‘Night Stay at Sea’ Experience
In addition to mini cruises, the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation is planning to introduce a unique offering—“Night Stay at Sea in Yacht.”
This premium experience will allow tourists to stay overnight on yachts equipped with modern amenities, combining luxury with adventure and offering a new dimension to coastal tourism in the state.
Boost to Regional Tourism Economy
The initiative is expected to:
- Diversify tourism offerings in Andhra Pradesh
- Attract high-value leisure travellers
- Generate employment in coastal regions
- Promote Visakhapatnam as a cruise tourism hub
Industry stakeholders believe that improving cruise infrastructure and introducing innovative experiences will significantly enhance the state’s tourism appeal.
Challenges and Next Steps
While the proposal has generated optimism, its success will depend on:
- Technical feasibility assessments by port authorities
- Regulatory approvals
- Infrastructure readiness
- Market demand and pricing strategies
The collaboration between the tourism department, port authorities, and private operators will be crucial in ensuring the successful rollout of these services.
Conclusion
With its scenic coastline and growing tourism infrastructure, Visakhapatnam is well-positioned to emerge as a key cruise tourism destination in India. The proposed mini cruise services and yacht experiences mark a significant step toward transforming the region into a vibrant hub for sea-based leisure tourism.
