Ladakh Travel Bodies Raise Concerns Over New Tourism Portal

Ladakh Travel Bodies Raise Concerns Over New Tourism Portal, Seek Stakeholder Consultation

Ladakh, 12 April: Tourism stakeholders in Ladakh have raised concerns over the recent launch of the official tourism portal by the Union Territory administration, citing a lack of consultation with key industry players.

The All Ladakh Travel Trade Alliance (ALTTA), an apex body representing various tourism and transport unions in Leh, has expressed strong dissatisfaction with the initiative.

Concerns Over Lack of Consultation

Addressing a press conference, ALTTA Chairman Tsetan Angchuk stated that the portal was launched without engaging major tourism stakeholders, including:

  • Tour operators
  • Taxi unions
  • Biker groups
  • Other travel trade bodies

He emphasized that such a critical initiative should have involved those directly connected with Ladakh’s tourism ecosystem.

Impact on Local Tourism Ecosystem

ALTTA leaders warned that the portal, in its current form, may:

  • Create confusion within the existing system
  • Disrupt established tourism operations
  • Offer limited benefits to local stakeholders

They stressed that any digital or policy intervention must align with ground realities and industry needs.

Call for Stakeholder Engagement

The alliance has urged the administration to:

  • Conduct comprehensive consultations with all tourism bodies
  • Ensure policies are inclusive and transparent
  • Protect the interests of Ladakh’s local tourism community

Additionally, the group reiterated its demand to make the Ladakh Resident Certificate (LRC) mandatory for all travel trade businesses operating in the region.

Outlook

As Ladakh continues to grow as a major adventure and experiential tourism destination, the situation highlights the importance of collaborative policymaking to ensure sustainable and inclusive tourism development.
