Bengaluru: In a major development affecting international aviation, authorities in Dubai have announced an indefinite suspension of airline landings at the emirate’s key airports, including Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport, amid escalating security concerns in the Gulf region.
The decision, taken by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), comes as a significant setback for global carriers, particularly Indian airlines that rely heavily on Dubai as a major international hub. The move is expected to disrupt travel plans and delay the gradual restoration of flights between India and the UAE.
While the GCAA has not officially disclosed the reason behind the suspension, industry sources indicate that a suspected drone attack on a fuel depot near the airport triggered a major fire, raising serious safety concerns. Flight operations had briefly resumed earlier in the day before being halted again following the incident.
Airlines have been formally notified that no carriers will be permitted to land in Dubai until further notice. In response, IndiGo confirmed the cancellation of its flights to and from the airport.
The Middle East, led by Dubai, accounts for over 30% of India’s international passenger traffic, according to the International Air Transport Association. The sudden suspension is likely to have a substantial impact on passenger movement, airline operations, and regional connectivity.
Industry stakeholders have also raised concerns over operational disparities, noting that UAE-based carriers such as Emirates and flydubai have continued limited operations, creating challenges for foreign airlines in maintaining a level playing field.
Earlier, UAE authorities had introduced controlled air corridors to gradually restore aviation activity, allowing a limited number of flights per hour. However, the latest developments highlight the ongoing volatility in the region and its direct impact on global air travel.
As the situation evolves, airlines and passengers are advised to stay updated through official channels and prepare for continued disruptions across key international routes.
