Mecca: Saudi Arabia has approved plans to develop a new airport in Makkah, marking a major step toward enhancing transport infrastructure and improving access for millions of pilgrims visiting the holy city. The announcement was confirmed by Saleh Al-Rasheed, Chief Executive of the Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites, who stated that the project’s strategic and economic framework has been finalised. Supporting Vision 2030 Goals The proposed airport aligns with Saudi Arabia’s ambitious Vision 2030, aimed at expanding Haj and Umrah capacity while improving connectivity and visitor experience. Currently, most pilgrims arrive via Jeddah’s King Abdulaziz International Airport, located approximately 80–90 km from Makkah. The new airport is expected to significantly reduce travel time and ease congestion. Early-Stage Development The project is currently in the planning and investment phase, with feasibility studies completed. While no construction timeline has been announced, the airport is expected to be developed through private sector partnerships, ensuring global standards without affecting nearby aviation hubs. Integrated Mobility Enhancements In parallel, plans for the Makkah Metro are progressing, with feasibility studies and initial designs already completed. The metro will strengthen connectivity between key religious sites and support the growing number of pilgrims. Smart City Initiatives Authorities are also implementing the Smart Makkah programme, leveraging artificial intelligence to manage crowd flow around the Grand Mosque and critical areas like the Jamarat Bridge. These systems aim to reduce congestion and enhance safety during peak pilgrimage seasons. Expanding Public Transport and Infrastructure Makkah’s public transport network continues to grow, with: Over 400 buses across 12 routes More than 430 bus stops and 4 central stations Over 185 million passengers served since 2022 Additionally, the “Makkah Taxi” service has been introduced, featuring modern vehicles with tracking systems and eco-friendly options. Enhanced Pilgrim Facilities Infrastructure upgrades are underway at key pilgrimage sites including Arafat and Mina, with new residential towers, multi-level tent facilities, and a 200-bed emergency hospital. Sustainability initiatives such as shaded walkways, tree planting, and improved water management are also being implemented. Transforming the Pilgrim Experience Officials expect these developments to boost private sector participation, support economic growth, and enhance the overall pilgrim experience, with a target to exceed 90% satisfaction levels. The upcoming airport, alongside metro and smart mobility projects, is set to play a central role in transforming Makkah into a globally connected and technologically advanced pilgrimage destination.
