New Delhi, India, 5 July 2026: India launches e-OCI Card and the upgraded FCRA 2.0 Portal, introducing two major digital initiatives aimed at simplifying public services and strengthening governance through technology. Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah unveiled the platforms in the presence of senior government officials, marking another milestone in India's digital transformation journey. The initiatives are designed to improve citizen convenience, reduce paperwork, enhance transparency and accelerate the delivery of government services. India Launches e-OCI Card for Overseas Citizen of India Services As India launches e-OCI Card, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders can now complete almost every service online. Applicants are able to submit applications, upload supporting documents and download the approved digital document through the OCI Services Portal. Existing cardholders can also obtain the digital version without filing a fresh application in most cases, eliminating unnecessary paperwork and physical verification. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the initiative is expected to benefit more than 50 lakh Overseas Citizen of India cardholders worldwide. Digital Travel Document Enhances Convenience The newly introduced digital credential enables users to securely store their travel document on a smartphone instead of carrying the traditional OCI booklet during every international journey. Travellers can present the digital document at Immigration Check Posts and, where required, during airline check-in. The Ministry has confirmed that all existing physical OCI booklets will continue to remain fully valid. Passport Renewal Process Simplified A major reform introduced under the new system removes the requirement to obtain a fresh OCI booklet whenever a passport is renewed after the age of 20 years. Instead, eligible users simply update their latest passport information through the online portal. The simplified procedure is expected to reduce processing time while making the service significantly more convenient.
