Mumbai: Air India has announced that its Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, Campbell Wilson, will step down in 2026, marking the end of a transformative leadership phase following the airline’s privatisation. Wilson had informed Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran of his decision in 2024 and has since been focused on ensuring a smooth leadership transition. He will continue in his role until a successor is appointed and takes charge. A Transformational Tenure Over the past four years, Air India has undergone significant transformation, including: Merger and integration of four airlines Transition from public to private sector operations Overhaul of leadership, workforce, and organisational culture Modernisation of systems and service standards Induction of 100+ new aircraft The airline has also made strong progress in upgrading passenger experience, including: Near completion of legacy narrowbody aircraft refits Introduction of new widebody aircraft with modern interiors Building Future Infrastructure As part of its long-term growth strategy, Air India has initiated key infrastructure projects such as: South Asia’s largest aviation training academy Two advanced flight simulator facilities A flying school A greenfield maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) base These developments are designed to support the airline’s ambitious expansion plans, including its orderbook of nearly 600 aircraft, with major deliveries expected from 2027 onwards. Leadership Reflections Commenting on his decision, Wilson said:“With foundational blocks now in place and a brief window before major aircraft deliveries begin, the time is right to hand over to the next phase of Air India’s growth. It has been an honour to contribute to this chapter of Air India’s journey.” Chairman N.
