Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 14 July 2026: Houthi Attack on Saudi Abha Airport has raised fresh concerns over aviation security and regional stability after Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi movement launched missiles and drones targeting Abha International Airport in southern Saudi Arabia. The group described the operation as retaliation for earlier airstrikes on Sanaa International Airport, which it blamed on Saudi Arabia. Although no casualties were reported, the exchange represents one of the most significant escalations since a period of relative calm began following the UN-brokered truce in 2022. Houthi Attack on Saudi Abha Airport Follows Sanaa Airstrikes According to Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree, the airport attack was carried out in response to airstrikes targeting Sanaa International Airport earlier in the day. The internationally recognised Yemeni government stated that the operation at Sanaa Airport was intended to prevent an Iranian aircraft from landing, alleging that it was carrying a Houthi delegation returning from Tehran. Saudi authorities did not immediately comment on the reported airstrikes. However, the Saudi-led coalition later confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted ballistic missiles launched toward southern Saudi Arabia. Houthis Issue Warning to Airlines Following the attack, the Houthis warned international airlines against operating flights through Saudi airspace. The group said airlines should take the warning seriously until restrictions affecting Sanaa International Airport are lifted. Houthi officials also accused Saudi Arabia of targeting humanitarian flights and preventing patients and stranded civilians from travelling through Sanaa Airport. Iranian Aircraft at the Centre of the Dispute The latest confrontation is closely linked to an Iranian aircraft that was expected to transport a Houthi delegation. According to Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, permission for the aircraft to operate was denied because it did not comply with recognised civil aviation procedures. Yemeni authorities stated that action was taken to prevent the aircraft from landing at Sanaa Airport. The Houthis later confirmed that the aircraft diverted safely to Hodeidah Airport after the runway incident. Airports Closed Amid Rising Security Concerns Following the escalation, authorities announced the temporary closure of airports under government control until further notice. The Defence Ministry also ordered the evacuation of Sanaa International Airport and surrounding areas as a precautionary measure. The developments have increased concerns over aviation safety, airport operations and regional airspace management as airlines continue monitoring the security situation. United Nations Calls for Restraint United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg expressed concern over the renewed hostilities and urged all parties to avoid further escalation. He called for dialogue to preserve the relative stability Yemen has experienced since the 2022 truce. The conflict in Yemen began in 2014 after the Houthis seized control of Sanaa, prompting military intervention by a Saudi-led coalition the following year. Aviation Industry Closely Monitoring Developments The latest exchange highlights the continuing risks facing aviation operations across the Middle East. Industry observers expect airlines and aviation authorities to closely monitor official security advisories while reviewing operational procedures where necessary.
